Background:

The school was founded in 1892 to serve the villages of Besthorpe, Girton and South Scarle. Situated eight miles to the north of Newark-on-Trent in a 'beautiful' rural setting, it is housed in Victorian buildings, features a playground and playing field, and is 'very well maintained.' The headteacher won the regional finals for the East Midlands in Teacher of the Year Award 1999 for work with parents and the community, with which there are close links. Close links are also maintained with local companies. Fund-raising activities at the school include an annual gala day, ploughing matches and square dancing.
