Background:
Opened in 1960 as a 'bilateral' school, Fernwood became an 11-16 comprehensive in 1973. It occupies 'compact' buildings, 'incorporating an appropriate range of specialist facilities' on a 'spacious and pleasantly appointed' campus shared with the infant and junior schools. The school is over-subscribed, with 1.5 applications for every place. It organises regular exchange visits with schools in France or Germany, is proud of its sporting achievements, and of its 'strong tradition' in music and drama. 'Good relationships with local industry and the neighbourhood community, based on trust and mutual respect, have been built up over many years.' 'The school'strives to uphold the best ideals of comprehensive education with a rich mixture of cultures working together harmoniously and a commitment to good academic standards in addition to a willingness to adapt to change without compromising the school's philosophy'.
