Background:

South Wolds Community School was opened in 1967. The school is situated on an attractive site in the residential centre of keyworth, a large village south-east of Nottingham and draws students from several surrounding villages together with Nottingham's southern suburbs. The school became comprehensive in 1972. The building has increased to reflect the growth in numbers, with pupils coming from eight villages south of Nottingham and up to the Leicestershire border. The school is popular and over-subscribed. There is high participation in extra-curricular activities, despite the fact that many pupils are transported by bus, and there have been extensive alterations to enable pupils in wheelchairs to gain easy access. Exchanges to Spain and Japan are arranged and the school is proud of its renowned activities in music, sport and drama. There is also a parent-teacher association. It offers a wide range of languages in a specialist language suite making extensive use of ICT and its virtual teaching observatory. The sports provision at the school has recently been boosted by a £500,000 grant from the Football Association for a new all-weather football pitch. The school aims to encourage self-esteem, self-discipline and a personal awareness of moral and spiritual values.
