Background:
Opened in 1884, Berridge has been a secondary, junior and infant school during its history, in addition to being used as a hospital during World War II. The original building remains, although 'internal changes have been made to accommodate changes in educational provision'. In 1990, the infant department was moved to a new building on a separate site. Facilities include a computer suite, community room for parents, designated resource areas, hard surface play areas and adjacent playing fields. 'The school has an excellent sporting tradition and offers many opportunities.' Berridge accommodates children with a variety of special educational needs (SEN), including Down's syndrome, autism and emotional and behavioural difficulties. 'Severe' cases are supported by classroom assistants and English is a second language for a large number of children, for whom the school employs two full-time specialist teachers. A private company offers before-school provision from 8.00am and after-school care until 6.00pm on site.
