Background:
In 1844 the Sisters of Mercy came to Nottingham and opened St Mary's Elementary School and St Catherine's Day and Boarding School. The schools gained a good reputation over the years and in 1951, grammar school status was approved. Present building in Beechdale Road was opened in 1962, when the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, generally known as the Loreto Sisters, took over the direction of the school. With the ending of all-age schools and the increasing demand for secondary places, St Mary's became a primary school and a new school was opened in 1965 to provide secondary education for boys and girls to the west of Nottingham, while the Loreto Convent provided a grammar school education for girls from all over the city and county of Nottinghamshire. In 1975, the two schools amalgamated to become The Trinity School, providing a comprehensive education for girls and boys from the west and north of the city stretching from Stapleford and Eastwood to Woodthorpe although pupils continue to be attracted from up to 16 miles away. There are two sites 100 yards apart. New intake pupils start in the lower school, which houses the first three years and specialist areas of technology, art and design, the music suite, a computer centre, two science laboratories and a new dance and drama centre. The Loreto building houses year 10 and 11 with a library, two computer centres, gymnasium, five specialist science laboratories, music facilities, a well-equipped drama studio, religious education centre and chapel. The new sixth-form centre is a self contained building on the upper school site. Its facilities include laboratories equipped with the most modern equipment and an interactive foreign language facility as well as computer centres and a common room and study areas. The standard of sports performance is 'excellent' and there is a new sports hall next to the gymnasium. There are spacious fields with a number of pitches, tennis courts and an all-weather sports surface next to the school. Both Beechdale swimming pool and Harvey Hadden athletics stadium are nearby and are used regularly. The school has Specialist Performing Arts College Status. 'The school's mission is to educate in the faith, to provide a safe, happy environment where pupils can be happy and do their best'.
